Frontenac Cup Ball Hockey Tournament Celebrates 10 Years

ALCDSB proudly hosted the 10th annual Frontenac Cup Ball Hockey Tournament yesterday at the Cataraqui Community Centre. The full-day event, promoting recreational play and friendly competition, launched in 2016. This year’s tournament brought together students in grades 4–6 from 16 schools across the Kingston region.

The event is made possible through the collaborative efforts of ALCDSB staff and the grade 12 Leadership class at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School, whose students play a key role in organizing and supporting the tournament.

Event organizer Mark Sonnemann, Principal of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School, emphasized the heart of the event. "The goal has always been about getting active, embracing winter, and celebrating hockey within our school communities." he said.

The energy extended well beyond the rink, with principals, educators, and family members cheering enthusiastically from the sidelines. Adding to the excitement, varsity athletes from Queen’s University men’s and women’s hockey teams were in attendance, alongside student athletes from Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School, inspiring younger participants throughout the day.

In 2025, the Frontenac Cup reached a significant milestone with the inclusion of students from the Limestone District School Board, growing participation to nearly 300 students and highlighting the tournament’s expanding impact.

As the Frontenac Cup celebrates its 10th year, it continues to strengthen community connections, promote healthy activity, and create lasting memories for students across the region.

So, who won?

The final was won by St. Martha Catholic School in a shootout against and Holy Name Catholic School.
